So your best friend’s sister’s family went to Family Camp last year and it sounded pretty great, right? Perhaps you made a mental note to do some research later.
But suddenly, the break is here! Somehow, it’s June already and you’re asking yourself... COULD Family Camp really be the thing that replaces our traditional summer trip?
If this resonates with you, read on.
Today we’re comparing the classic family vacation with our very own Family Camp. From meals to memories to money, we’ll cover some of the categories where Family Camp really shines.
But first, let’s do a quick refresher on Family Camp. What is it?
- Family Camp is a six-day experience where families and couples can deepen their relationships through unforgettable adventures in the mountains. Featuring top-notch meals, comfy hotel-style rooms, inspiring Christian speakers, and exciting outdoor activities, Family Camp is the perfect place to escape and refocus on what really matters. We’re located on the Glorieta campus, just 20 miles from Santa Fe in the foothills of the southern Rockies.
Now, what do we mean by family vacation?
- We’re using this term broadly, but based on your budget and interests, it could be anything! An all-American road trip, a Caribbean cruise, a staycation in your own city, or a week at your favorite theme park – the options are endless. Hint: if the endlessness overwhelms you, Family Camp might be just what you’re looking for.

Family Vacation: Regardless of where you’re going or what size your family may be, you’re probably going to have to pack a lot of stuff. And we all know that little ones don’t travel light. Even if you have multiple adults in your crew, it can seem like there are just not enough hands, hips, and shoulders to go around.
Family Camp: One of the best things about Family Camp is that we’re stocked up with all the gear you’d rather leave at home. We have jogging strollers, hiking backpacks, helmets, hammocks, bikes, balls, board games, life jackets – the list goes on and on. And as a bonus, every family is assigned their own counselor, for extra help throughout the week!
Family Vacation: With the traditional family vacation, travel can consume a lot of time and money. Extended road trips are great and all – trust us, we’re big fans! – but how does getting out of the car and NOT getting back in until the end of the week sound? Pretty nice?
Family Camp: We love that, except for a few activities, everything at Family Camp is contained in one area of the Glorieta campus, which means that even if you travel long distances to get here, once you’re here, YOU’RE HERE. Parents also love the peace of mind that our compact, kid-safe environment provides. Read more about this in blogger Lissa Anglin’s post: “Top 10 Reasons We Heart Family Camp.”
Family Vacation: In a lot of vacation scenarios, the entertainment is up to you. Take a road trip or staycation, and somebody has to be in charge of keeping the fun quotient high. Pick a cruise or a theme park, and you may feel pressured to try EVERY single thing, due to F.O.M.O. (Fear Of Missing Out). In both of these examples, the tears are bound to flow… from over-tired kiddos OR stressed-out moms and dads.
Family Camp: At Family Camp, there’s something for every age and ability, and the schedule is fun, flexible, and easy to follow. But the best part? If you decide that you don’t want to do an activity at the last minute, you don’t have to! You can take a nap. Rest is just as important as fun around here, and that says a lot! As far as entertainment goes, we promise you’ll never be bored. Check out this video to get a glimpse of the fun at Family Camp.
Family Vacation: Sometimes dining on vacation is a dream! But we probably don’t need to remind you… sometimes it’s the opposite. Sometimes it goes like this: Argue over where to eat. Decide on something. Map the directions. Find the place. Whoops, they’re closed. Never mind. Let’s buy groceries. Cook. Clean. Repeat in six hours.
Family Camp: Can you guess what aspect of Family Camp moms seem to love the most? THE FOOD! We serve three delicious meals a day, with vegan and gluten-free options, and there will never be a dish for you to clean. We even have coffee shops on campus and opportunities for parents to eat alone – date night! – while the kids are under the careful watch of the counselors they adore. One more perk: except for extra snacks, your dining budget is set in stone, so there’s no stressing about over-spending!
Family Vacation: You don’t have to go to Family Camp to create wonderful memories. You can do that almost anywhere! The question to ask yourself is this: do you want your memories to make a difference?
Family Camp: We’ve observed that when families spend time outdoors, away from their everyday norm, they learn new and wonderful things about God and each other. Our hope is that every moment spent at camp is an opportunity for your family to grow stronger. Family Camp may end after one week, but the impact really can last a lifetime.
Family Vacation: In 2011 a report by American Express revealed that Americans spend an average of $1,180 per person (or $4,720 for a family of four) on vacation costs. However, this same report showed that 48% of consumers desired to have richer, more meaningful experiences when they traveled. What does this mean? As a culture, we’re spending quite a bit on vacation, yet longing for something deeper.
Family Camp: To that end, Family Camp is a great solution. And when you consider everything Family Camp comes with – lodging, meals, activities, etc. – it’s very affordable!
As an example, the cost for a family of four (two adults, one teen, one child) reserving one room for lodging totals $2,206.00. Even with travel added in, you would still save money.
